Does artificial grass drain well? Bases, puddles and what to check

Artificial grass can let rain pass through its backing, but that does not make every garden drain well. The underlying construction and the route water can take through the site matter just as much as the grass you choose.

The short answer: look beneath the grass

A permeable backing is only one part of the installation. Water still needs an appropriate route through or away from what sits underneath. If the existing ground or surface holds water, covering it with grass does not by itself remove the cause. A quoted installation should consider the whole site rather than promising that one product solves every wet garden.

For a new artificial lawn, tell us where water collects before the survey. Useful details include whether it appears only after heavy rain, whether one corner stays wet and whether nearby paving or roof drainage sends water towards the proposed lawn. This helps us discuss the actual work required.

What goes under a Saygrass garden installation?

Our normal quoted garden construction uses a non-woven geotextile membrane, MOT Type 1 and grano dust, with suitable edging and the fitting details agreed for the job. We do not use sharp sand as the base finish in that construction or sand infill in normal residential installations. Your written quotation identifies the work and materials included.

The construction must still suit the ground, use and surrounding levels. We do not publish a universal excavation depth or drainage promise for every garden. Existing services, retained boundaries, access and any necessary drainage adjustments need to be assessed before the scope is agreed.

Why puddles can appear on an existing artificial lawn

There can be several explanations. Debris may obstruct the surface, part of the base may have settled, a drainage outlet may be blocked or the ground may be struggling to accept water. Photographs of the pile alone cannot establish which applies. Record the affected area after rain and how long it takes to clear.

Avoid adding holes, lifting seams or pouring treatments into the lawn without advice. Those actions can create another problem without addressing where the water needs to go. If a join is already loose or the surface is uneven, include close photographs alongside a wider view when you contact us.

Cleaning and base repairs are different jobs

Routine debris removal and appropriate cleaning help you care for the lawn. A professional maintenance visit may improve the surface, but it does not rebuild a sunken base or create a new drainage route. Persistent standing water requires the cause to be assessed rather than a guarantee that washing will resolve it.

For artificial grass maintenance, email photos, the approximate area and your address. For repairs or replacement, explain the installation history and what has changed. We use our own supplied grass for grass repairs and new installations, and the assessed remedy is quoted separately from routine cleaning.

What about grass over paving, decking or a terrace?

An existing hard surface or deck needs its own assessment. Check how it drains now, whether outlets need access and whether adding a covering changes thresholds, levels or cleaning access. Artificial grass should not be assumed to improve an unchanged surface that already drains poorly.

A balcony or roof terrace also involves permissions, loading, waterproofing and fixing restrictions. Provide any building requirements before a product or method is agreed. Our terrace guidance and grass-over-decking guide explain why these are different from a conventional garden lawn.

Ask for a clear installation quotation

Use the installation calculator for an initial garden estimate, then book a free site survey. We assess the proposed lawn, access, boundaries and preparation before issuing your written quotation. Drainage or access-cover adjustments are included only where specified for the artificial grass project.

Our installation service covers the towns and neighbouring areas listed here. Tell us about your site rather than assuming two gardens in the same town need identical construction. The right next step is an agreed scope for the actual address.

Your questions, answered.

Will artificial grass fix my waterlogged garden?

Not automatically. The backing, base, underlying ground and drainage route need to work together. Site conditions may require additional work that must be assessed and quoted.

Can a maintenance visit repair a sunken base?

No. Cleaning and base reconstruction are different services. The cause of unevenness or persistent puddles needs assessment before the remedy is agreed.

Do I need a survey before a new installation?

Yes. Book a free installation survey so Saygrass can assess the site and provide a written quotation. A calculator result is an estimate, not a drainage design.
